Monumento a Cervantes

For the 300th anniversary of the death of Cervantes in 1916, a national contest for the election of a commemorative monument was called and the winning project was presented by the architect Rafael Martínez Zapatero and the sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, although it was not inaugurated until the October 13, 1929. In the monument you can see Cervantes, seated under a pedestal, with the bronze statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza riding, at the base. It is crowned with a ball of the world and the five continents, meaning the spread of the Spanish language throughout the world and the back of the monument is represented by Isabel of Portugal.
