The National Theater of Santo Domingo, as it was called at first, was built after extensive and arduous research work in the main theaters of the world, in which techniques, criteria and concepts necessary to determine the characteristics that it should have were collected. that of the Dominican Republic. At the end of the sixties, the construction of a theater that met the maximum qualities for the deployment of the most demanding artistic manifestations was an ancient aspiration among the Dominicans. Such a theater would give place to world art and, at the same time, would put in the hands of national artists a demanding instrument that would spur the creativity and will that they have always shown. In 1970, the then President Joaquin Balaguer, appointed the task of building the theater architect Theophilus Carbonell. Before drawing the lines that would give life to our theater, the architect observed and studied the best theaters in the world. He toured Europe and America, observing the different conceptions and criteria when planning and building this type of building. We had as a reference the theaters of Colombia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Also the illustrious European tradition, which was becoming tangible in the theaters of Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Holland and Austria. Finally, the best rooms in the United States fulfilled the expectations of the architect from Quito.

Also known as Bacardi Island because of a Bacardi commercial filmed here in the 1970s, the small, picturesque island of Cayo Levantado sits just five kilometers from Samaná Bay, and boasts sparkling white sand and beaches lined with palms. Every day, small taxi boats leave from the port of Samaná, on Avenida Marina, that take visitors to this small island. Spend the day swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, or paddle boarding , and enjoy fresh fish on the public side of Cayo Levantado. You can also spend the night in the luxury hotel that occupies the other half of the island. Please note that there may be restrictions on visits on days when large cruise ships dock off the island.
